    Japanese Type 1?

Just picked this up at an on-line estate sale. Is it a Japaneseicon Type 1?

    Description stated:

    Condition:
Very good. No mum visible. Retaining approx. 80% blue. Action is good, bore is fair.

More correctly, Type "I" (eye), and yes, that's the beastie! Fairly uncommon these days, esp. unaltered. That name isn't the official Japaneseicon designation, its just a collector's shortcut.

    For ref:
    ~60,000 mfg 1938-1939
Sub contracted out amongst a few Italianicon firms, but designs and barrels from Terni.
Delivered to IJN rather than army.
Mostly Cadet use, but some reported in front line use at Kwajalen (?spelling).

    Never had mums!

I have wondered if the two piece buttstocks saved the Japanese any money on their Italian rifles, or if there was some other reason (easily replaced toes after too much parade ground use) besides saving wood to do this. The Italians surely must have thought it an inconvience.
