    1903 Bushmaster

Theres been alot of talk lately about the Gibbs "Tunnel Bast@rd", which brought up the "Bushmaster", so I thought I'd show you what I've been working on lately.

Got the barrel and action from Chuck.

Barrel had been cut down to 21", turned, and in the white. The barrel had been turned just enough to allow the front sight to slip on tight where its at. I cut it off in front of the sight, leaving the length just right, 18". Still need to recrown the muzzle.

The action is actually recovered from a drill rifle. Its nickel steel and was barely touched by the welder.

This project was my first time removing a barrel(another one already on the action), and first time installing one(the cut down). Got the barrel vise and action wrench from Midway. Worked good after I modified the wrench.

The stock was a good candidate for this project. What was left of the tip was beat and split. Lots of other cracks, too, that needed fixed. It's actually an old Mark I stock.

The handguard needed cut, too. It was split and had a half dozen "stitches" across the top. It was a WWII replacement with the vertical groove. I "modified" it, to say the least!

Realizing my chances of finding an authentic Bushmaster at a local yardsale are slim to none, and sporterized stocks and barrels being plentiful, I thought this would be a fun, budget project. It has been!

Now if I could just learn how to recrown that muzzle!

When I do, I'll let you know how it shoots.
