EY mark next to disc in buttstock?

There is an EY mark next to the disc on the buttstock that has appeared to have been X out. what does this mean? I have heared that ones with EY shouldnt be fired but what if the EY is X out. it was made in 1915 NO1 MK3*

EY was generally applied to obsolete or weapons otherwise not considered suitable for first line use indicating that they were for use under emergency conditions only. Often converted into grenade chuckers.

The canceled "EY" may very well mean that the butt was removed from an EY rifle before it was scrapped or otherwise disposed of, but there are folks here much more qualified to comment on that score than I.

That's about the strength of it JR and Dusty....... But before you treat it is simply an exchanged butt, just make sure that the EY marks aren't stamped on the steel too. EY rifles were certainly useable as normal rifles but they were well worn/used and the barrels were a bit down at heel too.

Once the cups were fitted to rifles, they were set-up by adjusting the threaded nozzle inside the cup to prevent the loss of gas between it, the cup below the grenade base (the plenum chamber) and the barrel. Once fitted to a particular rifle, it stayed with that rifle. The method of fitting up was known to Armourers and passed on to the bombardiers or grenadiers of course and I related it fully here some years ago.

We get into an old thread relating to DP rifles now too................ If the butt does have a barred out EY or DP mark from its former life on a DP or EY rifle, then for heavens sake, just scrape the old marking off, linseed the wood and be done with it!
