The P59 ammo box held four 25 pounder HE(high explosive) artillery shells. See the link below:
REL34736 - 25 pdr Ammunition Box | Australianicon War Memorial
The Quad artillery tractors that pulled the 25 pounder gun often had 2 P59 or P60 ammo boxes in them. We were looking for a P59 ammo box for our Quad. Would you like to sell it?

RogerSharpe. Does your Quad gun tractor type have the limber too - you know, the 'first' trailer that contained the ammunition?

The reason I ask is that when I was in my late twenties or so and living in Newbury, there was a scrap yard there that had about 20 of these limbers that were all red painted. The man there told me that they were all from 25 pounders originally but were ex Fire Brigade, who'd bought them in the 40's presumably and adapted the insides to carry extra hoses and the other stuff that fire engines take with them. The fire brigade disposals people had taken the good tyres/wheels off them and those tyres still remaining were the worn out baldies! They remained there, for sale, for many years because the towing attachjments were the old military hook and eye and weren't readily convertable to anything then current. Like everything else at the time, I wish I'd bought one then!
