    Markings on 1903 buttplate

Can anyone identify the unit by these markings on top of this buttplate ? This buttplate has been on this early single bolt stock for a long time. Thanks Robert

    Robert
The markings on the butt plate tell you that the rifle was attached to
    Troop H, 8th Cavalry ,Trooper #18.
The 8th Cavalry was famous ,in its time, prior to consolidation into the 1st Cavalry in 1921.
In June of 1913 at Bansak Mountain ,PI Troop H held off and defeated a much larger
    group of Moros.
Troop H was lead by 1st lieutenant George Patten in 1916 during the Mexican Punitive Expedition.
Troop H is a very interesting Cavalry since they were deployed from the Civil War on all over the world.
    Respectfully
    Ed Byrns

No, the 9th and 10th Cavalry were the "Buffalo Soldiers".
