No1 Fore end

G'Day,
I have attached some photos of the fore end from a no1 mark 3 that has the areas between the bedding points at the inner band and the nose cap relieved. Is this a standard practice from the factory or has someone done it at a later point. The rifle is a 1941 Lithgow with matching numbers to the bolt, barrel, and fore end.

It meets the criteria... an inch either side of the inner band recess and (at least) the last four inches to the muzzle. It does look a little unusual to me, having definite start and stop to the bedding areas like that. It may have been done post service, or it could have been done during service to correct a slight warping/ bedding problem....Hard to be sure, unless there has been gasket paper glued into the handguards.

The rifle came fited with a central side plate for a peep, so I thought some one may have done it to aid accuracy. Roger Wadham mentions this practice in his book relieving wood to give positive contact in the bedding areas. I was just interested if this was done at the factory.
