Another Travesty!

I know this is going to drive some collectors up the wall, but here goes...

Last year I glommed a beautiful Persian Mauser that someone had drilled and tapped. I knew it had no collector value, but it was priced accordingly and I was interested in using in the "open" class at a military silhouette match that my sons and I shoot in.




Understand that I couldn't do this to a unmolested mil surp myself. Since someone else had already done the dirty work, I could not restrain myself. I finally used it in a couple of the matches and the Persian did pretty well.

Ever since I found this one, I've wanted an Argentine Mauser in the same condition. Well, today I glommed the Ayotollah's South American cousin at an on-line gun auction...




Hoping that this is as good a shooter as the Persian. Better pics when it arrives.

Huh, must be bubba'd Mauser day or something. I came across this stuffed in the back of the closet with some non shootable parts guns this afternoon. I had forgotten I even owned it or why it would be mixed in with parts donors as it's a very good shooter. Last account I have of shooting it was at a deer(killed it deadern a hammer) in September 2008. Not really sure what it is...uh was. Never had the bases off to look at the crest but I'm leaning toward 1924 Yugo. I think.

That is a very nice looking Mauser. I would bet your are right about that being a 24 Yugo. Looks like a very nice turn down on the bolt handle.

Is the action an intermediate length or full K98 length?

Thanks. Yours are quite nice looking as well. It's intermediate. I bought it for the reciever with the intentions of rebarreling it to .250 Savage but after shooting it decided to leave it as is. Paid a whopping $90 for it just as you see it, minus the sling. Thats off my SSA M40, perhaps I should remove that and put it back in the box. If I ever sell it some clown will make a big issue out of it missing the sling that came with it.
Looking forward to more pics and a range report on the ayatollah's cousin. BTW, what are you using in the Persian, surplus or handloads?

I'm using 45.0 grains of IMR 4064 with a 200 grain Nosler Custom Competition bullet. It shoots pretty well, but I still get an occasional flier.



Except for the pesky flier, 45.5 grains of 4064 didn't do badly either

Still nice rifles (all 3). If you get tired of the scopes and want to make them look more original you could plug the screw holes and find an original bolt body. You could still go back to the scope at any time. I don’t think they look so bad with the holes plugged. But what I would be really tempted to do would be to get a set of the reproduction high or low turret mounts and and mount a German scope on them. I know --those are expensive, but it's fun to fantasize a little. Salt Flat

Once I get the 09 Argentine mounted up and see what it can do, I would like to get a pair of the turret mounts, like you've got there, vh. I could make it up as an 09 Argentine sniper and use it in the CMP vintage sniper match.

It shoots quite well, once I got the overall length right.


40 grains of 4064/174 gr .311 SMK/CCI 200 primer/2.875 OAL @ 100 yards off a sandbag rest

IMR 4064 has become my defacto favorite powder. I experimented with 40 to 43.5 grains of 4064 with a .311 SMK seated to 2.875 OAL. Took me 4 rounds to get the seating depth correct (first 4 were seated too deeply). Those 4 went high and a little wild. The next 6, all seated to 2.875 OAL, grouped together.

I'm figuring that the bullets seated too deeply may have reduced the case volume and caused a minor pressure spike.

One step ahead of ya Salt. Scope is a Lyman challenger but it and the mounts went cheap on ebay a coulpe years ago. Appearantly someone else had the same idea but found out it's not as simple as it looks, especially with the LSR mount. The barreled action is a 43 Spanish thats been d/t already so no concerns about destroying a valuable collectors item there.
Now I just need being in the mood to coincide with the time to do it.
