Your rifle would have been assembled in February 1944 most likely with a Dec 43 or Jan 44 barrel. The 3rd hole in the receiver was added by the person who sporterized it.

I'm confused. If the SN was polished out, how do you know what it was?

I think he meant the Z of the serial number was polished out.

Your rifle is not a Z series, the Z's had a prefix, not a suffix. Also the Z prefix rifles started right around 4,000,000 and ended right around Z4,002,920. They only made 28 to 2900 of them. Your number is way too high to be a Z, but I will bet that your last digit is a 7 and that would make it early in the final production run of A4s. Still made in Feb of 44 though.

The "Z" prefix was used anytime a duplicate serial number was detected. They are relatively uncommon except for the so-called "Z" series where a large batch of A4 s/n's were inadvertently used on A3's.

Highly unlikely that the rifle under discussion ever had a "Z" as part of the s/n.

I have about half a dozen examples where A3's were marked with the "Z" as well.
