Spring Field 1903a4 Sporter Restoration
I recently purchased a 1903a4 rifle which was sporterized and I would like to restore it back to its original configuration. I don’t have it in my position yet but hopefully I receive it mid month. I will post pictures once it arrives. My first question is what kind of stock should I put on the rifle. I like the looks of the C stock and I was wondering how scarce the originals are? Is it better for me to modify an A3 reproduction C stock or find an original? Dose anyone know where I could find an appropriate original or reproduction stock.
Thanks

depending on the serial number range, and the depth of your pockets..
a early C stock for the first 1000 made, WW2 Keystone marked C stock, and later a scantgrip..
i can modify it for the bolt cut..but...im not cheap lol.

An original Remington A4 Stock, if you can find one, with the bolt handle notch and all the appropriate markings is likely to be pretty expensive. The last A4 M1903A1 ("C") stock i saw went for $850.00 on ebay.
On the other hand many of the A4's in existence today have rebuilt at least once and have had replacement stocks issued and been refinished. If cost is a factor you may wish to consider retoring your rifle to "rebuilt" condition as opposed to "as issued" condition.
If you need a scope there is a link to an ongoing auction for an M73B1 with base and rings listed on this site within a few posts of your message. The scopes eyepiece appears to have been refinished but thats a relatively minor defect IMO. Its not cheap either but the price (right now) is low for the combination of scope, base and rings.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Jim

I already have a Lyman Alaskan scope with rings and base. So are the rebuilt stocks just issued stocks with the grove cut out for the bolt? I was thinking about just putting a reproduction C stock on the rifle. I can always change the parts out as I find a better option. I also have a replacement barrel. It is 2 grooved with the markings RA 2-44 written on it. I assume it is an appropriate replacement for the rifle. If you can’t tell I’m just learning about the Springfield rifle so it might take a bit to get up to speed. I do appreciate all the help I can get though.

You need to hit the really big gunshows in and out of your area. Real wood is very tough to find. Try Chuckindenver for a start.
