Hi Guys! I just got this in today. I have never held a Winchester. The guy I bought this from is thinning his collection and says this is a vet bringback. I believe him. But, lets see what the experts say. Thank you in advance.

The stock appears in much better condition than the barrel & receiver, any markings on the stock. Could you take some additional photos of the internal parts, barrel markings and gas cylinder. The stock may have been refinished but difficult to say from the one photo.

The stock has WRA/GHD visible but light. It has the v-cut in the trigger guard. My one concern on this was whether the stock had been sanded. I can now.tell if a Springfield stock has been sanded, thanks to this site but the stock on the Winchester is so much beefier I don't know. I will post more when I can get pics less than 3.6kb

That's a real nice rifle. What is the condition of the bore?

From what I can see it looks all correct. You're missing the upper band pin, which should be a solid pin I believe. The trigger mech has pit that look like rust pits...is that possible? I can't say if the stock is original, but switching for completeness is common. Correcting them that is. Nice rifle.

Thanks Jim, Friday was the first time I had ever held a Winchester, and my concern then was whether the stock was sanded( I still don't know that) Now, as I have been able to examine the rifle more I'm confused about the pitting. The trigger housing is by far pitted the worst, but there's pitting on the buttplate, some on the reciever leg, on the op rod(pic where the missing pin is) and not pictured, the bottom sling swivel has some. Even the long buttplate screw has alittle. Plus, the butt stock wood grain on the top, and down by the sling swivel looks swollen, its bumpy to the touch. I've seen pitting near barrels that still have parkerizing, but I'm confused how the trigger housing could be that pitted with original parkerizing. This rifle came from a southern state, so it could have easily sat in a damp basement for years. I guess I'll just wait for word from the experts. I do think its a nice looking rifle though.

The seller said 3.5 to 4.0 TE didnt have an ME gauge so a bullet was used. 1/8 in. showing. I did not buy this as a shooter, but I will shoot it to hear the ping.

Yes, the wood has been sanded. Very much so. Look at the area that approaches the buttplate. It's all rounded and they will come down square there. Also the inspector's stamp is light. I suggest a re-finish at some point but I can't be sure without actually holding it. There's many here that can comment on the pits present, Winchester was known for a rough finish on many M1 parts. We'll see...
