Aleutians I believe.

"We're surrounded, that simplifies our problem!"
I'd almost pay a dollar to know what that guy is packing around his neck...

A very similar image that was obviously taken shortly before or after subject image caption reads: USS LCI(L)-82 landing the Canadian 13th Brigade on Kiska Island circa 15 August 1943. Public Archives of Canadaphoto PA163409.
Looks like the soldier nearest camera has a mine detector to me.
note the two tone helmet net used by both troops from Canadaand the USA
, believe these were first issued during this operation in 1943Attachment 58988Attachment 58989
I'm guessing that 'speak into cone' is actually a 'hear out of cone'. I'm guessing again that early sets might have had a speaker instead of using headphones. I'm just guessing mind you.
Never seen one like it.

it is a radio
Farily rare
I have one
BC-745
is the transceiver of radio set SCR-511. It was developed for the Cavalry, when the cavalry already became obsolete.
The original name was Guideon Radio, but it was widely known as
"Pogo Stick".
A horseman with a Pogo Stick looks like a horseman with a banner in his hand.
The engineers wanted to have a widespread use. There is a mounting für mobile use and an external Power supply with NF- Amplifier.
Pogo was developed almost simultaneously to BC-611 , but is technically more advanced.

He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose
There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.
I'll bet RCS has three of them...
