    A very similar image that was obviously taken shortly before or after subject image caption reads: USS LCI(L)-82 landing the Canadian 13th Brigade on Kiska Island circa 15 August 1943. Public Archives of Canadaicon photo PA163409.

    Looks like the soldier nearest camera has a mine detector to me.

    I'm guessing that 'speak into cone' is actually a 'hear out of cone'. I'm guessing again that early sets might have had a speaker instead of using headphones. I'm just guessing mind you.
