1903\1917 Ammo

I know that you should not shoot standard 30-06 in an M1 due tot he pressures. Being bolt action is there any type of restriction for the 1903\1917s?

The 30-06 Springfield for the M1 is not cheap. Any links to good deals would be appreciated as well.

Presuming the '03 and '17 are in good mechanical condition, they will be fine with any properly manufactured commercial 30-06 ammunition.

Many would make an exception for "low number" '03s with the single heat treated actions. Many of these are brittle and it is often recommended that they not be shot with full power loads if at all. Others say it's ok. I'm in the middle and am using mine with cast bullet low pressure loads only. No problem with the double heat treated or nickel steel actions.

What would a low number be considered? My gun is in the shootable range, so low numbered int hat range?

Thanks Allen. I have used M1 ammo and they both shoot great! Just was wondering about maybe a little cheaper stuff. So steal case if fine?

Some of the other forumers may assist you as I am not in the USA something along the lines of Highland or Eagle as I have seen a fair few of those on clips from the USA but a better option is to go the extra yardage and re-load you can get a modest set of dies Lee Collet type and Lee scales & powder thrower a hand operated priming tool all moderately priced they are pretty cheap here in Aus about $80/AU for the 3 set dies. Case tumblers are about $120 - 180/AU and again it is just what you can afford ask around and get the low downs. When I was first starting I asked shooting friends who reloaded and had been for a long time that way you can get a good idea of pitfalls and gear that does not measure up. I use Redding dies and Forster Micrometer bullet seaters now and am looking at Wilson gear as another step towards producing the most accurate round I can for my F class and my wifes Full bore rifles.
And once you have the gear your away tailored ammo to suit your requirements cheaper too and not a bad way to while away a few hours.

Yup, if your going to get into shooting with any regularity reloading is the way to go to shoot on the "cheap".

The next least expensive way is to join the CMP to take advantage of all that has to offer. After that friend, there ain't no cheap way.

I wish I could load on the cheap, some of my reloads cost over $3 each.
