    No.4 Mk2 contract rifle

In the midst of re-doing my gun inventory records. I pulled A No.4 Mk2 "PF" series out of the pile and thought it might be an idea to research the serial number. I always presumed that it was an "Irish Contract" rifle.

I found a couple of lists of serial numbers in my data. At first look, it was either the first or second rifle destined for an Anglo-Egyptian Sudan order. (I say first or second as I found lists with both numbers as the first in the batch.

Ah, but hold on there young feller! Another list I found, with a bit more weight to it, says it was the first in a block of PF's that did actually partially fill the Irish order.

Rifle serial is PF301548. It is all matching, including bolt, receiver, magazine, bayonet, and scabbard. It has seen some use. It has a small repair on the butt stock, and what looks like a replacement rear handguard.

Your thread title (No2 Mk2 Rifle) certainly 'drew me in' - "I wonder what that's all about" I thought !

Anyway - according to my list :

PF 301547-PF304047 Anglo Egyptian Sudan (2,500 rifles)
PF 309348-PF359347 Irish Republic (50,000 rifles)
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

I've found more than one list. One says PF301548 was first of the batch for Anglo-Egypt Sudan, one says it was the second, and another says it was first of the first batch sent to Ireland.

I guess ya pays yer buck and ya takes yer chances!
