Mauser Hunting Rifle

I was looking at the Zastava M70 Bolt Action rifle as next years Deer rifle. They seem to be a bit hard to find. I wanted a Mauser action again. I really miss using Interarms Mark X but I wanted to preserve what's left of her barrel for my kids, she was my goto rifle for hunting, target shooting, and plinking for 28 years. And although, the rifles I have been using, most Rem 700 actions are nice... something is pulling me back to the Mauser action

I thought about getting a used Interarms Mark X, then I saw the Zastava M70 Mauser but the thing I don't like so much is the pencil barrel on the rifle. That's when I started thinking about finding a old Yugo M48 receiver and building my own rifle off that, with all the features I like. Seems like M48 receiver are hard to come by, at least in a reasonable price range.

I was trying to stay away from a bubba'ed "sporter" because I have a bad habit of spending gobs of money putting sporters back to military configuration. But, looks like I might have to. Did locate a M24/47 that's been pretty caca'ed up by someone on Gunbroker not an M48, but looks like she might be a good candidate.

Still trying to decide what I want to do though.. Don't want to end up with yet another put-er-back-to-mil project. Maybe keep waiting on a low cost M48 receiver.

Found a 1895 Chilean mauser carbine barreled action with the complete bolt, complete trigger, trigger guard, mag base plate, follower. all matching. Barrel in gone but don;t need it anyhow. I don't have experience with the 1895 Chilean mauser so i'll need to research if it can handle .270WIN before I buy

Short answer: NO.
270 Win SAAMI max pressure is 65,000 psi, far beyond what the '95 action will handle safely.
Also, the 270 win cartridge is too long for the action.
I do know of one being built about 40 years ago by a local smith. It was a single shot and didnt hold up well. IIRC, headspace had opened up to the point of experiencing casehead separations in less than 75 rounds.
Get an M98 action and be done with it.
If you're set on using a small ring action the best are the Mauser kar 98a, Mexican Model 1910 and the Swede M94/M96. But even these should be limited to pressures of less than 57,000 psi.

IIRC some of the Chilean rifles were OVS rifles that were never delivered.

I'd just get a nice sporterized rifle and leave it alone. Plenty out there that are nice hunting rifles and poor candidates for restoration.

A 98 sporter may be a good source for a receiver.
-You may want to consider a 03 or 03A3 in 30-06. 8MM ammo in the future will be less common/available.
-A 98 Israeli Mauser in .308 would be another possibility. A no drill S&K mount is a low cost way to add a long eye relief scope.

I did see a bunch of K98 sporters on GunBroker but none (yet) bubba'ed enough make me feel okay about parting it for the bolt and receiver. The reason I want just the bolt and receiver is so that I can pu a customer barrel in .270 Win on it. Thanks for the info on the difference between the Yugo M48 and the K98, I wonder what the weight difference between the two are.

Lots of really nice 1903 sporters out there in a variety of calibers. Be careful though...that's a real rabbit hole.

Just ask my .270...and my 250 Savage...and my 35 Whelen...and my 7mm....

You see that’s a problem, I have a ton of. 1903 parts and if I got a 1903 receiver then for sure i would end up putting it back to Military configuration. I have tried before LOL. But you are right, it is a rabbit hole

Thank you just the information I was going to look up. To be honest I knew nothing about that Mauser, just saw that a boat load of barreled recivers were available cheep and didn’t need to go through a FFL. Looks like the 98 is the one I’ll be looking for based on yours and others advice and experience. I’d love to go the 1903 route but just know I could never do it

Any modern receiver will have to go through an FFL. Another mauser type action is the US 1917 enfield. I got a sporterized one in the mid '70's, for my first deer rifle. Still have it. I've put thousands of rounds through it since then, and it still will shoot if I do my part. It'll be the last one I ever sell
