I believe they received war stocks of No4's
(all makes) Stens,Brens etc and brought back home as the BritishIndian Army from Burma and Indochina.
So the newly independent Indian Army had a good number, plus they 'liberated' a good few from Pakistan.....
Probably so
Based on some I have, India did FTR No.4, No. (T) and No.5 rifles. In some cases they added new serial numbers.
Canadasold No 4's to India, and Pakistan, late 1948. I know Pakistan ordered 100,000, but don't know about India's numbers.
