This is one of those strange pictures, where you ask yourself where the target is.
They seem to be shooting against the small hill very close by, but that could not be real.
Probably the hill is much more far than it seems to be, otherwise they would be covering really accurately.

Possibly in holes in the ground.

Perhaps the hill is a little further from the road in real life due to how the photo was taken/type of lens used.

From the tree in the center there looks to be a gully below the trail they are on. From the caption I bet there is a road down there. Combine this with what you say about the hill being further off than the 2d picture leads on and I think it makes sense. Perhaps a small convoy trying to race through.

I'll add that the sticker on the photo is not needed. Their kneeling technique is clearly NOT USMC (knee would be in the soft part of the tricep just below the elbow). I'm only half serious. I've only every seen a USMC marksmanship manual. Not a clue what's in the Army one.

Well, you notice that the rifleman isn't using either the loop sling or hasty sling. Perhaps with a sudden action he has just dropped and raised his rifle rapidly without thought of sling technique or proper stance.

And beyond that apparently a trench-gun.

Looking at the picture a tad more attentively, I guess the brush at the edge of the road blends into the hill so well, that it seems a lot closer than it really is. It makes the edge between road and hill just disappear, so it looks all very close.
