A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. Manufacturer of various vintage rifle scopes for the 1903 such as our M73G4 (reproduction of the Weaver 330C) and Malcolm 8X Gen II (Unertl reproduction). Several of our scopes are used in the CMP Vintage Sniper competition on top of 1903 rifles. Brian Dick ... No problem at all I suspect though that we may get a limited audience on the Mk2 as it's a US piece and it's posted in a Lee Enfield forum, but you never know As for the Britishicon compass, I'm not sure what the overhaul cost is on a non-liquid prismatic compass, but I'll bet Paul Crespel at Trademark London could give you an estimate based on the photos of it and probably provide you some additional info for free

Or maybe Mr. Laidlericon knows something of them, though I imagine it's been many moons since he last saw a MkVIII in actual service!

Funny you should mention that Clav but while I taught my son to map read with a prismatic compass (which I gave him afterwards and hopefully he has stashed away carefully.....) my dad taught me to map read using a marching compass as shown by Terrylee on the previous page. I remember being taught to look through the slot in the mirror then using the mirror to read off the bearing. Then having to do the 180 degree change to get a back bearing.

Anyway, hold fire and I'll have an article ready soon.................. just as soon as I've got to grips with these blxxxy PH5 sights!

Ahhh.... a map, compass, protractor, sharp pencil and a method of counting paces. Everything an infantryman needed to find his way about the scrub before this GPS stuff came about.

Do they still teach the old way now?
