this would be correct the star marking changes were made in production , the weedon 'upgrades' were pre WWII

Patrick, that is one of the errors in Mr Stratton's book. Skennerton
is more clear on it (in his book, The US Enfield). The Mk1 rifles were not up-graded to Mk1* standard. The * modifications were incorporated in the manufacturing process some time after the first 70000 rifles from each manufacturer. Mk1 and Mk1* rifles would have served side by side. The P14 was only ever envisaged as a stop-gap, so it wasn't too much of an issue.
