At this time we should remember ..........
...... what happened four years before D-day.
From May 26th to June 4th, 366,162 men, inculding 139,911 allies, were lifted from the beaches of Dunkirk. These formed the basis for the army the allies landed on the beaches of Normandy.
These times should be remembered and considered for without the recovery of these men, there would have been no D-Day.
Three books that I have deal with these day's. Each in their own way follows a different narrative.
"The Sands of Dunkirk"
Richard Collier
"The Miricle of Dunkirk"
Walter Lord
ISBN 0 14 005085X
"The Nine Days of Dunkirk"
David Divine
All are well worth the read.

One of my favorites is "Before the Dawn" by Brigadier Sir John Smyth, VC.
The author, a Victoria Cross winner, has the distinction of having taken part in two major retreats of the Second World War, Dunkirk in 1940 and Burma in 1942. This book is a description of both these British
military disasters as seen through the eyes of a Brigade and then a Divisional Commander. It is also an assessment of where the responsibility lies for each failure. Fully illustrated with photographs and maps.

Sounds like a great book, and a dubious distinction!
