I'd shoot it. That's what it's made for. If it were an unmolested, all matching '53 Izzy or a pristine '49 I'd still shoot it--- even if only rarely.
1954 is one of the most common dates for the SovietSKS. Also, since you are in Canada
I am assuming that the magazine has been modified-- so it's not like it's an all original, as issued rifle.
Also, the sks is a S-ton of fun to shoot: manageble recoil. Decently accurate out to 100-150 yds. 7.62X39 is plentiful and inexpensive (at least in the US).
