I watched a fascinating old BBC documentary on You Tube last night

Anyway, highly recommend watching chaps.

I noticed about two thirds of the way through, a soldier had a hose clamp attached pistol grip on his L1A1 forend.

It must be one of the earliest examples of the practice I have seen.
