Fair SMLE: Would you buy?
Okay, this has been nagging at me for a few days.
Last week I passed on a fair condition 1938 SMLE. Gun was filthy, probably an import. Action was very loose. Finish was maybe 15%. Oil soaked stock. $200. This seemed a lot considering Century has no.4's for $170 right now (ordered one December 22...still waiting). Somebody set a quarter into the stock in place of the regimental disc (1977).
Good call to pass?
I also came across a Pattern 14 for $600 (I think that's what it was going for) that day, but I don't know enough about them to really consider it (and that's more than I'll pay for a surplus bolt-action anyway).

Good call to pass !!
I'm used to UK
prices but from what I've seen on gunbroker.com and prices that other folks are quoting it sounds like a $100 rifle at best.

A 1938 vintage indicates either Indian or Australian
parentage. Odd date, but still not very promising...

Mine is very close to yours, but in good condition. Paid 120 for it.
Keep looking, there's one out there with your name on it.
