Unusual Marlin/Underwood stock...

on Ebay. (Not mine & I don't know the seller) - Has anyone seen one marked like this. I have a very early Underwood & I'm considering it but it's alot of $$$.

I was interested in it until I saw the cartouche. It is too weak for that kind of money. But, yes, some early ones were stamped Marlin.

I just got an early 95%-original Underwood (Bavarian Rural Police) from the CMP, and it had an early I-Cut Highwood "MARLIN" stock on it.

Here's the thing: The eBay one has the late Underwood cartouche on it, where-as mine directly from the CMP has the early big-box Underwood cartouche. Not sure what to think about that, actually.

And the last time the CMP sold one of these "MARLIN"-marked stocks, it went for $683: http://auction.odcmp.com/auctions/detail.asp?id=1845

I've heard stories that as few as 300 of Marlin's stocks were marked this way, but I have absolutely no way to verify that. Anyone else have any ideas?

The cartouche on that eBay stock is NOT correct. Underwood changed the cartouche 3 times during production. The one on that stock was never used on I-cuts.

Mac - I appreciate your pictures and commentary. I tend to think the ebay seller is describing his item accurately and I don't believe the 'MARLIN' was recently added.

I was also disturbed somewhat by the Cartouche style. What strikes me most in your post is hearing about the small number of stocks that were marked this way. Given that my Underwood Serial # falls into just under the first 16,000 made I tend to think it unlikely the ebay stock would be correct for mine.

I'm gonna keep watching it and see what other commentary comes up here on the forum. Doubtfull I'll jump tho..
