Acutally, using the example from the Culvers site, the names weren't obtained illegally, or by breaking into their site.
An Internet user simply registered properly using the name AdminGirLX, then using the on-line member list, began sending spam PM's to everyone on that list, most likely employing "bot" software to do it.
Their system may not be quite configured correctly to minimize this kind of activity, but it's becoming more common.
Users should look at their PM's carefully to see who these types of messages come from. Admin messages should only come from people listed in their respective Forum Leaders pages.
In the case of Jouster
, the Jouster Forum Leaders Page
In the case of our forums here, the Milsurps Forum Leaders Page
I notice that the Jouster page refers to something called the Romper Room. I have no idea what that usergroup is for, but having dealt with some pretty strange personalities during the temporary hosting period here, I can only imagine.
Hope that helps some of you avoid getting a virus …
Regards,
Badger

NEVER download and install any 'FREE' 'anti-virus' or 'anti-spyware' program from the internet.
In this day and age of piracy and identity theft it's foolish to open up your hard drive to a 'FREE' online scan that will also install what it wants to install. These people wouldn't go to the expense of setting up web sites and downloadable programs for free. They are constantly looking for people who fall for their scams.
Spend the money to buy a reputable anti-virus suite such as Norton and keep it updated. These newer (paid for) programs will most often keep you from loading something that will do you harm, or even kill your computer if you have a weak moment and fall for an alert such as this.
Doug (Badger) goes to extremes to keep this sort of thing off our web site and he spends a great deal of time keeping himself updated on new threats.
He pays for expensive programs to keep things safe here and 'hired' a team of moderators to help monitor everything.
(The pay sucks though!)

A new wardrobe but the same show all over again.

Time out!
The "Romper Room" is the "time out" corner for bad behavior. It's apparently expected, as few there know how to act civilly to one another. I left a long time ago. A shame, as it once was a good watering hole.
