rear hand guard on Lithgow loose

The rear handguard that runs from the center of the rear sight back to the receiver is loose on my Mk1 No3. How do you tighten that up? Here's a pic of the part:

Tighten up the rivets (with hammer and punch) and/or bend the retaining clip as needed.

By the way, that's a Number 1 Mark III. A No.3 Mk.1 is a very different animal.

I'm a newbie so bear with me here, the retaining clip is located where? And as to the designation I'm still trying to keep it all straight. Seems like LE's have a LOT of model #'s!

On the inside of the handguard - held on by the rivets visible on top. It hugs the barrel and keeps the wood from falling off.

So how do you remove this hanguard to get to the clip?

Pull it straight up after flopping the sight forward. Be gentle. Don't twist or squeeze - or you will crack it. You can also pry it up with a popsicle stick or similar wooden lever inserted at the U-shaped cutout near the receiver. Or remove the forestock (presuming you know how to do so without damage) and push it off from below.


Not actually a difficult procedure. Takes about 3 seconds once you know how. Takes even less time to break the thin forward "ears" clean off if careless or clumsy.

THANKS! Yeah some gorilla that owned it before me cracked the front handguard because they were to lazy or didn't know that they needed to remove the nose piece off, all of 2 minutes, and tried to push the two thin back parts over the rear site. I spent 30 minutes to repair it. I really appreciate everyone's input and help. This forum is great!

Parashooter I got the rear guard off and discovered that the back rear clip was broken off and missing, hence the movement. I also discovered that as you stated that who ever had removed this before had cracked the wood and tried a bad fix on it. So as the part looks original to the rifle I think I'll just fix the crack properly and leave it at that. Thanks for your help!
