Here is the product page from the manufacturer (Francis Barker) of the M73 compass, which is a MkIII compass with guard and graduated in mils (though it's still available special order in degrees).

According to their own spec sheet, all their compasses are filled with purified kerosene.

Hi Claven2 , you're a brave man to doubt PL , wait for in-coming !
My T.G.Co 1940 MkIII No B76579 does have the grill , however , it is in mills , so has had an upgrade . The lower portion of the lume groove is there but the grill screw seems to have displaced the lume "stuff" as if it was a later addition .
I confess that I know nothing about compasses , but thanks to your previous links , I have now moved my 1918 M.I.O. and also T.G.Co Mk1 away from my bedside cabinet !

If anyone is really interested in these compasses, would a future pictorial article such as stripping and assembling be of any use to anyone? It will be pretty basic and while I'll do it in the instrument workshop in a shielded bay, you might not have those facilities or even spare parts

Some years ago they were selling the mil glass dials off as surplus and I got one. Looked slightly better than the grotty old degree one which was on there. My one has several other defects though (including a tap snapped off in the lanyard swivel hole where I was trying to clear out the remains of a broken screw). I would welcome an article.

Hi MkVII , interesting about those surplus mils dials , because my one lifts off and I know it shouldn't . So now I don't know if it's been refurb'd !
Hi Peter , I'm guessing you use some sort of crimping tool to tighten the dial ? As for a pictorial article ... bound to be interesting though I don't anticipate pulling my one to bits .

Hi Peter - yes, I would be delighted to see disassembly pics. In my case I sent mine out despite my being able to take it apart for two reasons:
1) I didn't have the necessary parts.
2) Mine had lots of Radium in it and I ddnlt have the facilities to deal with the contamination and
3) I had no way of generating the necessary vacuum to properly refill the compass
I'm sure there are "at-home" fixes ot these problems, but they were beyond my knowledge!!!

Give me a week or so and I'll get a 'needy' Mk3 from the tech stores and strip and assemble. It's a few years since I overhauled hundreds of the bloxxy things. I'll also tell you afew secrets about them too............ Hold fire!

Hi Lithy - nice examples. I'm beginning to lean towards early MkIII = no guard, late MkIII - guard.
Do both of yours retain the fluid inside?

Hey Peter, do the MkIII's still in stores retain radium, or have they been upgraded to modern illuminants?
