A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Yes, that's a 'chisel' stake mark for the original sight on the right of the front dovetail. The round punch mark in the center in front of the sight was to tighten up the dovetail for the new adjustable sight.

We know you're not right because the mark is found on Inland receivers that never had adjustable sights on them.

I wasn't clear at all. My meaning was, what if the punch mark was used to tighten up ANY sight in the receiver dovetail, including the original? Reasons for this being necessary might be related to a temporary problem in machining the dovetail during manufacture or a run of slightly small sight bases. However, that is pure speculation.
