Help with a SA ser. # 254,5XX
I was out buying ammo at my local gun shop where I came across 1903 SA ser. # 254,5XX with Redfield peep site. Sporterized but with a 2-17 SA military barrel. Bore was clean enough and metal finish was about 70-80%. 250.00. My question is bubba gun or worth restoring? I thought they only came with Lyman sights. And if not would Redfield have been used on an early gun? If Redfield was used, would it have been a compition gun? I have a couple early stocks that it would fit in, just for a display piece, not a shooter.

The rifle came with neither sight, and was not drilled and tapped for a receiver sight. If you are looking for one to restore, I would pass on that one. The rifle has been through overhaul at least once as it has a later barrel. Parts to restore that one would be high, and it is still D&T'd.

Considering the whole "low-number" thing, it seems a little high.

D&T low number? I would look for another candidate.
