Why bother modding an SKS? The Russians thought they were just about perfect the way they are.... and the Russians do know a bit about guns.
If it were me, friend, I would get the SKS, buy a bit of ammo.... then save my money for another neat gun. There are lots more out there, you know. I bought a Vetterli-Vitali in 1961 and I'm STILL finding interesting things to pick up. My latest? SKS.
Welcome aboard.

IMHO most SKS mods are like tossing your money down the toilet. Most look OK, but function poorly.
The SKS, as-issued, is reliable and reasonably accurate. Anything you do to it will make it worse.
Save your money to buy more ammo, if you ask me.

I will join with smellie and Claven2. Leave the SKS as issued. It's one of those rifles that just are best left alone, and I'm not a purist! I've modded all sorts of things. They're good rifle just as they are.
Stock up on 10 round chargers and practice loading. It's really fast once you have learned good technique. Removable SKS mags are truly a BAD idea!
Scoping it won't help accuracy, unless your eyesight is the problem.

ok so the 10 round stipper clips are legal but the box magazine is pinned to 5 rounds. will the stripper clip loading technique still work properly? or should i be cutting the clips to 5 rounds?
sorry i'm all pretty new at the stripper clip thing.

Put five rounds in the charger. To minimize "rattle", block off the rest by wrapping the unused portion with tape, big rubber bands, wood srips, epoxy filler, etc. You'll need to accomodate the SKS charger guide, so do some mocking up first.
During the "ban" years in the US, I knew a fellow who could reload his SKS faster with ten rounds than the AK competitors could swap mags and cycle the action (myself included on the odd occasion when I entered in the AK class). He was pretty competitive in our Ft. Benning CQB/modified IDPA matches no matter what he shot, though!

I've used the ten round clips and with practice can get five only to strip off. It comes with a feel and practice. If your mag is blocked correctly more can't come off anyway.
