Enfield Prices (UK)
I am amazed at the prices still being realised on Enfields - and more particularly 'parts'.
As I see it there are several possibilities :
1) I am 'way out of date'
2) There is no recession
3) There is a recession and rather than having money in the bank and earning no interest they are 'speculating' on 'collectables'
So which is it ?
At the Scotarms Auction yesterday the following were the realised prices (including the Buyers Premiums)
All prices in GB Pounds Sterling (multiply by 1.6 to get US$)
Two No4 magazines £48
A box of Trigger guards (maybe 12) nose caps and firing pins £120
Eleven magazines (No1 & No4) £144
Eight 7.62 No4 magazines (3 x Stirling & 5 x Enfield) £264
A No7 (BSA No7) magazine for rifle serial number BS0328 £312
An Aldis WW1 scope with front shade missing £960
A No1 MkV (which looked to me original - but I'm no expert on MkV) £768
Several No4s which looked as if the woodwork had been sanded and was veeeery dry £250 - £260 each
A BSA (commercial) Long Lee with Volley sights and cut off. Looked OK to me but maybe wasnt as the price seems a bit low - £360
And for those of you with other tastes :
30-06 Springfield 1903-A3 £768
Nazi K98
in 7.62 £408
7.62 Mauser Gew98 converted to 410 calibre £456

Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

Well I definitely think that currently there are better rates of return to be had by buying enfield bits with your cash rather than putting it in the bank, interest rates being what they are.
I've also observed that for enfields, the price of the bits seem to be worth more than a whole gun, which I suppose reflects the difficulty of license firearms slots etc.
Some of the prices seem quite reasonable tho in some ways: the 7.62 mags - if five are CR... marked then that's very good as they sell for £100 each normally. The eleven mags at £13 each sounds good too - as long as they're not crappy repro types.
Some of the prices you mention Al seem high but there are still bargains to be had!
The last three guns you mentioned seem to me to be a bit on the high side (although I'm no expert on springfield prices) - the 7.62 mauser esp.

Thanks Alan,
The No1 Mk V went for a good price, have my doubts if it was all original, or maybe someone did get a bargain? Anyone out there with a new toy? Find it strange one of them going to auction, unless the owner was oblivious to what he had.
The M1903a3 was what I was wanting to get down for and would say that was very fair price also.
As for the bits and parts, 2 x No4 mags £48 ? more money than sense I would say.

Apparently all of the Enfields and bits and pieces were from one collector who was giving up.
According to the auctioneer he had split his collection between this and the previous auction ( which I couldnt make) and there would no more stuff coming from him.

Does anyone know any collector selling up ? Last place I would be selling my collection (if I had a collection) would be scotarms, an easy way to get rid of all the crap in one go, but to put decent pieces through .....

The two enfield mags at £48 were 7.62 ones. One an original enfield and the the other a repro with the ejector tab broken off. The number 4's had replacement british beech wood work (British
, Savage and Long Branch actions) and not particularly well fitted. It looked like ex dealer stock rather than a collector hence all the parts and the four barrelled actions which were waiting to be built up into complete rifles. The long lee was a bargain if the bore was good, I did not look at it as I expected it to go for far too high a price.........next time I will check out all the interesting lots.

The 1903 A3 was a rebuild possibly by Parker Hale or Colenso Arms
The No1 MkV is coming in to me tomorrow to be checked over by the guy that bought it, so will get to see if it was all original.
The two bargains were the box of Enfield bolts that incuded a number or .22 bolts for SMLEs & other .22 bolts that were fitted with dust covers. The other bargain was the SLR L1A1 .22 magazines

At least I saved Myself a Journey regarding the M1903 A3, but look forward to hearing the outcome of the No1 MkV if the owner doesnt mind?, that would of been worth the Journey at that price if its a collectors peice. (If its serial No A65 then its a lost cause, only original part is the action)

Yup - it was that one.
I did notice the forend was stamped EFD, bore was very good.
I know that there is questions regarding the rear sights on MkV's but as I said I dont know enough about them to say yes or no.
The .22 SLR magazine + a 7.62 SLR magazine + 5 assorted miscellaneous magazine made £21.60
The two magazines were listed in the catalogue as being for the No4 so having a surplus of magazines I didnt look at them. They were apparently dated 1965 so maybe that should have rung some bells.
The box of eleven mags included 2 or 3 No4 mags and certainly 2 (maybe 3) 5-round 'repro' magazines . the rest were No1 mags
The barreled action and bolt for a No1 and the three barreled actions with bolts for No4's made £384 for the four.
