This is the experimental trial ammunition for the British EM-2 (Rifle No9MkI) and experimental FN carbines (CAMP ect) which evolved into the Belgian FN-FAL

From what I understand this is the .280/30 (.284”, 140gr mild steel core ball) .

Salmon Pink tip 140 grain Mild Steel core “Type C” bullet

Headstamped “RG” (Radway Green) “49” (1949) “280/30” (280 cal bullet, 30 cal base case)

I took pictures of the markings on both sides and top of the case, internal packaging.

The 1949 concept now morphed into 6,8mmSPC.

Very nice round. Too bad it didn't make NATO standard.

The pink tip 140 grain ball is probably the commonest of all the surviving 7mm loads in the UK and can easily be found as single specimens. However, any form of packaging for the 7mm series is scarce and I would say that crate is probably a unique survivor.

Assuning it has been found in Canada it probably was sent there for the cold weather trials on the Yukon. It would not have been for the ten EM-2 rifles built by CIL as they were in 7mm Compromise calibre. (7x51mm)

It is also unusual to see it packed in bulk. The normal packaging for the ball rounds was in flat 20 round (2 x 10) packets.

Saddler - You obviously like the EM-2! As I said above, it should not be hard to find examples of some rounds (mainly pink and brown tips) as you are in the UK.

Of course, other types are a little harder to find!

I did a trade a few years back - some Kynoch made 303 ammo (in Churchills of London packets) for some EM-2 ammo

Never got the ammo!!

Will chase it up this year when I see my RFD mate who was the middle-man

I have a 6.8SPC rifle - the ballistics of which are extremely close to those of the EM-2.
Last year I even managed to track down a copy of the Dugelby book on the EM-2!! LOTS of good data in that....

I knew Tom Dugelby well, and hopefully helped in some small way with the book. Since that was written of course, a lot of new information has surfaced. Not least, I have traced Kent-Lemon's son. I would very much like to write a revised and updated version of that book, but it is a litttle way down the list of things to do!

I am fortunate to have fired a couple of EM-2 rifles, one in 7mm Compromise and the other in 7.62mm, but not one in its "proper" calibre of .280/30. However, I have a cunning plan to rectify that!
