Importing a helmet from the USA

Never being sure which way the wind is blowing on any given day I have a question. Is it legal to import a Vietnam era helmet into Canada and is it legal for someone to ship it to me from the USA?

I see no reason why not. Afterall, the customs declaration discription could truthfully state that it is 'vintage personal safety equipment'.

Absolutely no reason to get stressed my Tim's drinking, Hockey Night in Canada watching brother. It doesn't go bang. It is no longer current military issue, and as long as the customs declaration is truthful, you won't have any reason to worry. Word to the wise - do not ship with a courier. Use parcel post. The courier companies charge a customs brokerage fee for doing bugger all. Extra paperwork that serves no purpose but clutters up someone's filing cabinet.

Instead , have the seller send it through the post office. Canada Post will charge you $5 for the privilege of opening the US Post Office's wire cage. Five dollars is significantly less than Fedex or UPS will hose you. And where I live, there is a retail postal counter at the end of my block. I have to drive to the nearest courier depot.

I just bought a Swedish Helmet on E-bay about 3 weeks ago. No problems with the mail.

I second the "NO UPS, NO FED-EX, NO COURIERS" shipping. These companies have a nasty habit of charging an additional "brokerage fee" on items shipped from the United States into Canada. This could be $40 - $50 extra cost.

The best shipping is USPS. (United States Postal Service) The seller simply takes the boxed item to his local Post Office, fills out a small Customs Declaration sticker that they give him, and away it goes.

Depending upon value, most of the items I have bought and had shipped by mail have not had the $5.00 Canadian Customs Inspection charge added to it, but, if they are going to charge Duty and Taxes on an item, they will add this charge.

Probably a description of "Steel Helmet" or "Collectors Helmet" will suffice. I think I would avoid the word "Military" in the description.

In general, if it is not a Gun Part, telescopic sight, or current Military used item, there should be no problem if you have it mailed using USPS.

I shipped one into the states and there was no problem. I can't see why there would be one the other way.

No Problems shipping any helmet from any era into Canada. I have been collecting US Helmets and Liners w/decals for years...(68 & counting)...never had a problem shipping them in from the U.S.

I may have a few of them for sale soon...WWII, Korean and early Vietnam...if anyone is interested...let me know
