It's the big stamp that sayd ENGLAND or small marks saying something like 303.CAI.NY or JJCO.NY.NY. Have a look under the muzzle or at the edge of the woodwork.

Thanks newcastle - I wish those pictures had turned out as there are some small markings in both those areas. I checked both sarco and numrich and neither one has butt stocks for sale. sarco has a complete replacement furniture set for $125 plus the ride. I checked gunbroker and carbines with modified furniture is not selling for much. One went for under $200. Even pretty nice ones are not going for much more that $350-400. Well I'm a bit miffed about it - I was really starting to drool over this but now I'll keep looking. I told the gent at the shop I'd bring back information as to what it was and what it was worth.

So I'll do that for him. Thanks all for the assist -

    Be well,
    Steve

I paid $219 for one with numbers matching on bolt, receiver and stock. Only non matching is the magazine. That was a year and a half ago or so. $500 for one without a complete original stock is way out of line.

I agree Aragorn243. I took the info back to him, as well as what they are selling for, and he just smiled. Apparently his partner took it in trade for a really nice lever action 45 long Colt rifle. So he's hoping for an unknowing person to come in and fall in love with it. No harm no foul - - I'll find one.

Need more photos. Bolt, receiver, forestock S/N should match. Unlikely that magazine will, but who knows? Barrel is genuine No5, ground Knox form is the clue. Should have intact front sight/flash hider/bayonet mount. New replacements are available. Buttstock has been modified into a "pistol" grip, and badly. Hard to find, esp. with matching wood. Took me a long time. Did it come with sling hoop on RH side of buttstock? Rear sight s/b marked with an "F" and have only some ranges marked on rack. Forestock for 1945 may or may not have metal cap, probably not. Latest models(1947, some 1946 had them. 1945??) Perhaps other members will know. Price is WAY out of line for modifed stock. $200-250 more like it.

Fazakerley the only place they made No5's? I was sure that I'd worked on many, many BSA/M47 marked No5's in my time. Maybe I was mistaken as it was a few years ago now............

I'm STILL trying to get an original No. 5 butt stock from SARCO. They have so far shipped me two reproduction stocks, which I have returned for exchange. Nice repros, but not original as advertised. Last time, I sent them a photo of the butt end of an original and a repro. So, maybe they'll get it right this time. Front wood they sent me was original, though.

GordP, your thread 15 above......... Just checked in our main armoury and it looks like there are at least two Army issue, still on charge and definately not fake BSA/M47 marked No5 rifles. So there's probably more out there too. Anyone else got one (or two........)
