Harlan, sort of at the same time! Bought a couple of '03s back around 2003, had Eric Pierce at National Match Armory give one his target rifle treatment, with the last two '03s I now have 5, Around 2005 got into restoring M1
carbines. Have 12, from every maker except IP, finishing up the last two restorations now. Then in 2007 I came down with Black Rifle Disease, got 23 ARs now! I think now I'm into GI 1911a1itis...no wonder I'm always broke!

I never got into black rifles, so I have to admit I have no knowledge there at all. (I don't have anything against them - I just never went there)
If they're so addictive you can end up with 23, it sounds like it's a good thing I never went down that path!
As I said, I have no knowledge about them at all, but a few years ago an acquaintance at the time showed me an AR-15 that he built to look like a Vietnam era M-16 and I would have loved to have it. I didn't have a clue how much it was worth, and he was acting 'cagey' about a price, and saying he might want to sell it, but I wanted to learn more before I made any deals.
I remember he said there were some things about it that were hard to come by, but I don't remember what he was talking about now. I only wanted it because it really looked so much like an M-16, and I thought it would go great with my WWI and WWII U.S. military rifles. Do you know of anything like that, or am I making any sense?
He suddenly moved way up to Connecticut (or somewhere up there) right afterward for a job opportunity and I didn't talk to him for a couple of years. I came across his email address and asked about the AR and he told me he had to sell it right after he moved to pay bills.

Harlan, here's an AR-15 -M16 lookalike I built. Used an M16-A1 surplus upper receiver group, the lower is an XM-16E1 semi receiver made by Nodak Spud in Minnesota, they specialize in retro receivers.
This is a 1976 vintage Colt Sporter 1, the civvie version that was based on the earliest M16s (without the forward assist)

I have almost the exact same project on a back burner. I have a Feb 1918 SA M1903 that has been sporterized but no metal work. Still has the rear and front sights about the only thing they did was cut the stock down and a little rasp work. And of course throw away the band and the Bayo mount as well as the stock sling swivel. I'll get it back together this summer soon as work cranks back up.
Maybe I can show off mine this fall.
