I tend to think it is the other way 'round, John.

I don't remember anywhere in history where 'athiests'
went out into the world converting the masses, whether they
    wanted converting or not!

Well, Communists. Atheism is an integral part of Marxism. Both Marx and his avid follower, Lenin, certainly urged their followers to convert the world ("liberate" in Marxist dialectics terminology). Marxists today, atheists all, continue to engage in "missionary programs", not with a cross but with machineguns, bombs, and nuclear weapons.

Self-styled "intellectual" Marxists continue hold sway in our universities, where they work to twist the minds of susceptible young people.

Marxists in the news and entertainment fields applaud and cover up for fellow Marxists who kill thousands to promote "liberation." If those are not attempts at "converting the masses" I don't know what they are.

In their zeal to destroy religion, primarily the Catholic religion, the Marxists, ironically, came close to duplicating it. The religious Holy Trinity of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit became Marx the Father, Lenin the Son, and Engels the Holy Spirit. The entire Communist system is a sort of satanic parody of the Catholic religion. But the Catholic church has no "Berlin wall"; disaffected Catholics can leave, unlike the inhabitants of Marxist, atheistic paradises.

You don't? You mean Madeline Murry O'Hare DIDN'T go to Court at the drop of a hat to impose her vanishingly small minority opinion of religion on the overwhelming majority? Compared to her....the Crusades were penny-ante stuff!
