I've got a book on the 82nd AB that was printed in the early 50s and there are several pics in it that show pouches on carbines. My father was a glider rider in the 82nd/101/17th. He got moved around quite a bit.
When they tell you to behave, they always forget to specify whether to behave well or badly!

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Remembered the pictures I had copied from some of my uncle's photographs he made in WWII while with the 1269th ECB. This one is of Sgt. Bob Thibodeaux and according to the information on the original picture was made in Franceicon in 1944.

There is a pouch on this stock, and an M-8 on the barrel.

Going by the machinegun and the bayonet lug, it's Korea. Certainly not WW2 or Vietnam. And it shows the pouch on the stock so my question is answered - at least from Korea on.

Myself? I find the mag pouch on the stock to be in the way and heavy but I have easy and quick access to ammunition and, more importantly, no one is trying to keep me from resupplying.
