Had coffee today with the owner of this gun and he thinks the mark after the 1* appears to be a E ??

    Does this open another door?

    Thanks

Why use a 50 pound bomb when a 500 pound bomb will do?

Looks like the remains of the "F" for "F (FTR)...."

Judging from the serial number electro-pencilled on the barrel this rifle was marked by one of the more practiced/motivated/sober workers which would explain the very neat "F".

The side of the body has been polished since then, making the "F" look like the remains of an "E", in my opinion.

There really wasn't any point in engraving the serial number on the body side IMO, but I suppose the SOP was to do them all during FTR, as so many of the early war SNs were so poorly and illegibly stamped on FAZ and Maltby rifles.

“There are invisible rulers who control the destinies of millions. It is not generally realized to what extent the words and actions of our most influential public men are dictated by shrewd persons operating behind the scenes.”

Much changes, much remains the same.
