Patrick, I was talking about muzzleloaders. I solder a taller front sight in place of the standard sight. The sights have same profile just taller. In North - South Skirmish Assoc. competition we shoot at 50 and 100 yards. I can take a picture of my Richmond musket if you like.

I solder a taller front sight in place of the standard sight.

"In place of" implies that the original sight is removed, something that I would normally avoid. However, since old foresight blades are typically worn down and rounded, sometimes almost to the point of uselessness, it is IMOH an acceptable solution to build up the blade with soft solder, file it to shape, and paint it black. This is a reversible alteration that makes the rifle more usable for shooting.
