M1903A2 questions
I was at a local pawn shop today and saw a Rock Island M1903A2 marked. Would an early Rock Island ( serial number 12999) M1903 be turned into an A2. The A2 is not stamped but maybe electro penciled. Would this be correct? The cal. is 30-06, sporterized with a Lyman peep sight. Priced at $300. Can anybody help? I do not have any pictures, they would not let me take any

What features make a 1903 a 1903A2. I don't recall hearing of one and don't find it in my copy of Brophy.

The ones that I have seen both had the A2 engraved. They were barreled actions that were used as sub caliber training devices on various artillery pieces.

RIA rceivers with a SN < 285507 are considered unsafe to shoot. Collectability is zero. Unless there are some good parts on it, value is zero.

twh, Thanks for the enlightenment. I went to Brophy and looked under "subcaliiber devices" and there it was.

I have seen "A2" both scribed and stamped. If the rifle was still in military condition, it might be worth something. Of course, when they were used as sub-caliber firing devices, they didn't have stocks. I saw one offered several years ago that still had the adapter on it that allowed it to fit inside the cannon.
Slightly off-topic, but they also used Krags as subcaliber firing devices on seacoast guns. I have a box of ammunition for a Krag
sub-caliber device that was used on a 3" coast defense gun.
