Single Feeding the M1903A3?
Hi All,
Anyone know how the extractor of the M1903 an A3 is different from the Mausers, since it allows for single feeding?
Is it more flexible to slip over the rim, or shaped differently? Something else?
I'm curious how much wear and tear it puts on the extractor to use it that way.

I'd still put them in the magazine and let it pick them up. I don't think it's that much different.

I don't think it causes too much wear on the extractor since it was designed to use the magazine cut off. I'm not sure of the differences though.

There's a difference in the angle of the bevel on the extractor hook. This allows for single feed in the Springfield. The Mauser essentially was designed to use controlled feed. This means cartridges need to be loaded in the magazine then slide up under the extractor as the bolt is pushed forward to chamber a round. Remember , the Mauser was designed primarily as a weapon of war loaded via stripper clips. Does that make sense?

Oh, of course it makes sense. But the Springfield is also a battle rifle, loaded with stripper clips.
By most accounts it is simply a 98 Mauser derivative. This was just a design point difference I was curious about, since I was aware you have to place the round in the mag with the 98. Though I've read you can squeeze the 98 extractor claw an get it to slip over the rim. Have never tried it though.
Was primarily thinking about indexing rounds and how that might play out in a box fed rifle, vrs. single shot rifles. Since the 03 can be both, it caught my interest.

I realize that, LOL! I am wondering if it brings some extra wear and tear to the extractor though.

Years ago I put a .243 Winchester together for my dad. Used a Mauser Supreme receiver and a Douglas premium barrel. While working up loads he broke the extractor, and told me that he had been dropping the rounds in the chamber rather than feeding them through the magazine. The extractor had to bend quite a bit to jump over the rim, and finally gave up.
