No 4 Feeding issues.

Are there any threads here that address feeding issues of the No4 rifle. I have a stable of No4 rifles and several of them have magazine feeding issues. I have searched and can't find anything to the point.

Feeding issues are most likely to be magazine related. What I have done is watch how it misfeeds and gently bend the magazine lips to try and get the cartridge pointing in the right direction. You have to be gentle as like any metal, if you get too excited and break a lip off then it won't be pretty. Once sorted, the magazine is meant to stay forever with that rifle.

Also remember that the magazine was designed around Mk7 ball, not commercial soft-points.

OK, it should also feed Mk8 ball, but I don't recommend using Mk8 (boat-tails), or any brand of boat-tails for that matter, in a Lee-Enfield that has a few miles on the clock.

Any bullet that is loaded to a shorter length than the OAL of Mk7, or is a radically different profile, or BOTH, WILL give you headaches.

Soft-points, even of "close-enough" profile, MAY also hang-up from time to time.

If you "fiddle" with the front magazine lips, you may get some joy. Too much "fine tuning" and you might be up for a new mag if a lip falls off from metal fatigue.

Ironically, Most, maybe all, of mine shoot the Hornady 174gr and pulled 7.62X54 BT's very well. I think the worst group so far with any of them has been about 5" at 100yds, and that's the extreme. Most of them are at least 3"@100yd (most better) guns with most loads. But luckily, they all have near VG or better barrels and I have taught myself how to properly fit the wood from reading Mr. Laidler and others advise

The Sierra 180 Pro-Hunter flatbase and the Hornady 150 Spire Point both feed very well through anything I have when seated to the OAL of a Ball round.

Neither is MilSpec, but if they feed, then MilSpec will feed also.

Once in a while, gentle tweaking of Mag Lips on a new rifle is useful.

I am running a couple of P-'14s, 5 or 6 Rosses and a dozen or so LEs and LMs, all between 1894 and 1945.
