You might as well forget that pat of the story. The markings near the muzzle, etc. make that hugely unlikely...
JMoore is absolutely correct, those marks on the muzzle are UK civilian proof marks showing that it was sold 'out of service' into the UK Civilan gun trade, then sometime after it made its way the USA
Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...
