Hxp and lake city. Brought it with me again today as we had a clean up of shooting area. Brought 4 clips : two of each type of ammo. Put masking tape on gas plug to check for leak. Shot all four flawlessly.... ????????? Tape still intact. What's going on here?

Sorry can't say. I'd love to be there to help. I still say ammo. That's what it sounds like. Inconsistent ammo.

Either it's ammo, or you've shot it enough to smooth out what issue it has been having.
Question - is the stock an old surplus stock (usually reddish hue, sometimes with stampings/cartouches) or is the stock a new manufacture one? Reason being that it might be worth looking inside of the stock to see if you notice any usual wear or damage marks - wood dings, scratches, etc. Sometimes stocks need a little work to really fit a rifle right. In particular, look at the heel of the shoulder stock - where the bolt would be at it's furthest rearward point...right in the back niche. Is there any indentation in the wood in the shape of the back part of the bolt? The bolt could be slamming into the stock, causing a short stroke.
Additionally, look for any wear from the op rod on the right side of the stock (looking down at it). If the wood looks worn or smoothish, the op rod could be rubbing the stock and affecting the rifle cycling.
This really is a process of elimination. The Garand
is an excellent rifle, but there are many pieces that work together in the system - and if something gets out of sorts, the system starts to falter.

Stock is a very old GI but still locks up tight and there is no binding issues with it. Hopefully bugs might have been worked out if it could have been something finicky, we'll see next time I take it out.
Cheers
