Anybody own a T/C rifle? Not black powder
Checking to see if anybody to owns a T/C rifle has had problems with "soft strikes" on the primers so the cartridge doesn't fire!
Had that happen to me 3xs out of 6 attempts. Used commercial Hornady .308 SST. Cost me a 12 point buck as I could only "aim and click"! Re cocked the bolt several times but to no availl.
I field stripped the bolt in the 20 degree weather but could not find any ice, foreign object, or cold grease. Both on the pin and the spring. The "soft strikes" later went off after two attempts and one refused to fire at all even with a deeply dented primer.
Hornady says it is the rifle and my gun smith friend says that several people have brought in their T/Cs with that problem or related ones. Waiting to hear back from T/C. Thanks

Which just about leaves the spring as the suspect - it may be a touch soft. It not only has to dent the primer - you can do that by slowly forcing a nail into the primer by squashing nail + primer in a bench vice - but has to make the primer base hit the anvil with sufficient velocity to generate an impact that causes ignition. As a slightly dubious analog, think of safety matches. If you draw a match slowly over the striking area on the box, you will only wear down the match head. If you do it fast enough, the match head will ignite.
In other words, the spring is just not moving the striker fast enough.

Good luck dealing with T/C. Their customer service sucks big time. A friend bought a T/C Encore .30-06 just before deer season this year, oops last year now, and it wouldn't extract/eject live rounds or fired cases. The ejector was jumping the rim leaving the round/case in the chamber. He contacted T/C about the problem and was told up front that some Encores had left the factory with the wrong ejector assembly( that says a lot for their QC department don't it, also tells me that their guns aren't checked for function after final assembly.) and they would send him the correct one free of charge pronto. Three weeks pass and no parts so he contacts them again and gets told by the same person he spoke with initially that they weren't shipping any ''accessories'' at that time and were not sure when they would be. My friend argues that what he needs isn't an accessory but rather a part, T/C however groups everything not a complete gun as accessories. To make a long story short he never did get the parts he needed to fix the problem. Things may have changed by now but who knows. I'll ask him if he still has the rep's name he delt with.

I passed on the Encore after some research online and with some friends locally indicating that the design was not as accurate as a single shot rifle should be due to inconsistant head space. I do understand there is a pin that can be replaced to correct the problem. Not certain if your issue could be related to this one.

Accuracy wasn't an issue with the Encore I spoke of. In fact it rather exceeded my expectations, 5 shot groups averaged a bit less than 2'' at 100yds with a variety of factory loads and the best was 1.5'' with Remington 150gr CL's.
The problem was it left the factory with the wrong ejector assembly, the round shank was undersized and allowed the claw to slip past the rim of the case.
I got an e mail a little bit ago from the fellow that owned that Encore, he returned it to the shop where he bought it after getting the green weenie from T/C concerning the parts they promised to sent him. The shop owner then returned it to T/C for repairs, it hasn't been seen or heard from since. It was sent back in September 2013.

Which model are you referring to? I have two TCR-83's and three Contender Carbines. Th only problem I ever had was with the 35 Rem carbine. Some lots of ammo were a bit short in the head to shoulder dimension, thus creating slightly excessive headspace & unreliable ignition. Never had a problem with reloaded ammo.

That wasn't my experience with them, back when I was active in IHMSA.
