U.S. Bayonet ID ???
Hi, neighbor of mine brought a knife (as he called it) in a metal sheath (which is a bayonet) & has the hooks on it to attach to a web pistol belt over to me & wanted to know what kind it is & if it has a collectors value to it? OAL in the sheath is 15 1/4" long, OAL of the bayonet is 14 3/8" long, & the OAL of the blade is 9 3/4. The blade is a single edge (double edge at the point) with a blood groove in it & still has the cosmolene on it & no rust on it, but the metal parts of the handle has a light coating of rust from being exposed to morister over the years. The handle halves are hard black Bakelite. The blade markings by the handle are as follows: A F H a stamping of the Flaming Bomb & U S under it.
Thanks in advance.

Yes it has collector value. Photos would be very helpful but it sounds like a WWII Garand
bayonet made by American Fork and Hoe.
Check this listing on ebay and see if it looks like that:

Not a metal scabbard though...we DO need pics. Mind, I recently saw a Ross bayonet for sale in a K98
scabbard...

The dimensions are correct for the M1
bayonet that came out in 1943, but the dimensions for the scabbard are not. The scabbard for the M1 is 11 1/4 inches overall, with a metal throat and fiber body. The A.F.H. marking is for American Fork & Hoe, which I believe was a division of True Temper.

a trip to the America page at BAyonet Collection Presentation would identify this and virtually every other 20C US bayonet, in all over 2000 bayonets are shown and most identified

Agree that it is a US WW2 bayonet for the M1
Rifle (or the '03 Springfield, it will fit both but correct for the M1) but the scabbard is all wrong. It would be interesting to see a picture of the two, especially the scabbard.

The scabbard is the right one, I`ve seen pics of it since asking questions about it on here. You are reading my post wrong. I said the OAL of the bayonet while in the scabbard is 15 1/4" long. Not the scabbard by it self is that long.

Right here you said that it came in a metal sheath. That is what is confusing everybody. It should be in a plastic scabbard with a metal throat.

Also, the total OAL of the bayonet and scabbard is not important, but the OAL of the scabbard is.
By the way, the 10" bayonet is the M1
Bayonet, to be used on the M1 Rifle, by a soldier wearing an M1 Helmet.
