As mentioned by another, this is an officer's sword, not an NCO sword. I didn't see a Showa or Seiki stamp above the mei (signature), so it may be a traditionally made blade. You might try asking at the link below regarding the mei and the quality of the sword (will need some better close-ups for the latter). It's best not to ask about value on this linked site, the members are generally crusty, hard core traditional Nihonto (Japanese sword) devotees and don't react well to what they might perceive as monetary as opposed to aesthetic interest (not to imply this is true about you, but just be forewarned!).

Hi Mil - bloke I am on a different wave pattern I am not money driven but a true collector and would not insult them by even asking for a value it was bad enough on both sides the attrition and carnage and broken homes but now at least 2/3rds of the world knows some measure of peace. But I will chase them up it is missing a Seppa if anyone has a spare WWII one lying around, I am not going to take the handle off as I do not know how to and the pics I have are from the chap I received it from did a swap no money changed hands I will try and blow the Mei up with MS - 2010

Hi Mil this is the best I can do at this stage there is nothing past this except the 2 holes at the end of the tang suggesting in discussions with the previous owner this may be a replacement handle hence the two holes in the tang the mystery deepens somewhat Watson!

I was the one who put a value [IMO] on his sword , I am also a collector and every thing has a value on it, and that includes Japanese swords, and who gives a rats a$$ to what sounds like a bunch of "wanna be monks" who might not react well to what they perceive.
How silly .
