A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. My friend 'restored' an L1A1 rifle (albeit a very early UK icon

spec dewat). I sent it through the workshop system for him and it came back looking spick and span, as per the usual MoD finish plus a set of almost new wood, found in a hidden cupboard. Then his idea of further restoration turned into farce when he had it sprayed in the shiniest GLOSS black paint and eye wateringly shiny woodwork together with a whitened sling that would have put a concourse Rolls Royce to shame..........

I think that he'd been on too many quarter guards - in the sun!

Pirbright probably did that too him, drill and duties course...

Very few decent early Long Branches around; that one would clean up very nicely, it's a bargain if the bolt is original. The MkIII sight is presumably a replacement for the two position peep, or it might even have had a MkI originally.

As for brightwork, reminds me of an old handbook where it stated that "telescopic sights are not to be burnished with rotten stone or other abrasives", or words to that effect!

The other surprise is the minty bore. Hard to show, but a mirror like finish.

Headspace checked perfectly on the No-Go gauge.

Hard to believe a gem under all that Shellac!
