Jim, I believe you are right. After zooming in it looks like it may even have some designs stamped into it. For a lefty, it could be a custom made holster. Especially back then.

They had textile techs even back then. Some guy on board a supply ship with a giant sewing machine and a slab of leather? I'd love to see close up. Specially the knife he has on.
