Question about Detroit PD M1 Carbine Stock

I apologize for mixing Detroit history and stock markings, but the combination tells a pretty interesting story. For me, collectability is a combination of "correctness" and provenance. For my rifle, it appears that is "correct" in the way it came back from Germany to Detroit. It also has spent its almost entire life in the Detroit 4th Precinct. The ability to go back and find its history at least until about 2008 - 9 when they sold the rifles is one of the reasons I bought the rifle.

Now to start another conversation... This thread Detroit Police Department Carbines - CMP Forums (post #8) indicates that the known range of DPD rifles is 14267 to 14452. Mine is actually numbered 14056 so I'm a couple hundred earlier in the sequence. I got the impression that the information came from War Baby 3. Can someone check on that? I did read that the Detroit Police department started numbering rifles back in the late 1800's starting with #1. By the time they acquired the M1's carbines they must have been up close to the 14000 range. Considering that Detroit had over a thousand officers during the 60's, it would be reasonable to think that they had more than 200 M1 carbines.

Thanks. I might try to contact Zanders (apparently they purchased the carbines from Detroit) to see if they could check their ATF records as a courtesy to find out how many were purchased and if mine was in the lot.

You wouldn't believe how this thing was hiding from me. Looked for it where I thought it was back in June. Was about to give up finding it tonight and it was hiding where I thought it was but took twice to find it. Anyway this will be the best place for this info. The sling has a 12 inked on it as you can see. The butt plate is the odd ball type. The 5 digit number stamped on my receiver is 13XXX. This rifle came from Gbroker from a Tennessee dealer.

I know that this thread is getting a little stale, but thank you for posting your pictures. I just purchased a USGI tin of M1 carbine ammo and realized that I needed to jump back onto this subject.. So it looks like there are at least four examples of this same buttplate on Detroit M1 carbines. It would be nice to know who made the buttplate and stock. I also see that the butt area under the magazine pouch is a lighter color just like mine.

The history around these Detroit M1's is just fascinating. They have been kept under governmental control for almost their entire life with apparently a minimum of tinkering. All of your pictures are so similar to mine. I'm going to craft an email to Zander to see if they can tell us how many they received from Detroit and any other details. It would be neat to get a registry going of these rifles considering their unique nature.
